I'm taking a moment to make a non-Shae-related post. I just finished reading Three Cups of Tea, the non-fiction account of Greg Mortenson, a former climber who decided to begin building schools for girls in the highest mountain regions of Pakistan in an effort to promote global peace.
From the book, a quote from Brigadier General Bhangoo, fomer personal helicopter pilot to Pakistani President Musharraf:
"Osama [bin Laden] is not a product of Pakistan or Afghanistan. He is a creation of America. Thanks to America, Osama is in every home. As a military man, I know you can never fight and win against someone who can shoot at you once and then run off and hide while you have to remain eternally on guard. You have to attack the source of your enemy's strength. In America's case, that's not Osama or Saddam or anyone else. The enemy is ignorance. The only way to defeat it is to build relationships with these people, to draw them into the modern world with education and business. Otherwise the fight will go on forever."
Mortenson started the Central Asia Institute (CAI) and has built more than 40 schools in northern Pakistan, and has now moved across the border to Afghanistan.
I'm using this medium (my Shae blog) to follow the advice in the acknowledgments of the book to suggest Three Cups of Tea to help spread the word of the needs in that area of the world. Please consider reading the book, and/or supporting the CAI (www.ikat.org).
Shae photos coming soon...
